The project

Given the increase in water pollution in densely populated urban areas, the mission is to develop solutions that address one of the greatest environmental challenges of our era. My work in bioremediation focuses on using immobilized microalgae to purify contaminated water, a strategy that not only improves water quality, but also protects public health and preserves the diversity of aquatic ecosystems. With a commitment to sustainability and innovation, conscious practices for the management of water resources are promoted in response to the urgency exacerbated by climate change.

Motivation

Futurology on bioremediation

It began as a result of the environmental degradation of a stream in my community, which has occurred over the last three decades. This stream, which was once renowned for its clarity and rich biodiversity, hosting species such as fish and otters, has gradually become a recipient of solid waste, sewage and stormwater, resulting in a foul-smelling condition and a visible loss of life. aquatic This change has sparked interest and motivation to explore and apply effective remediation and restoration techniques to return the stream to its original state and ensure it once again becomes a vital resource for the community and the environment.

02

Initial Stage

The project began with the collection of water from the stream in my community, coming from the Luján River, with industrial discharges.

This sample was analyzed in the laboratory and the analysis found the presence of heavy metals, such as chromium and copper, and physical-chemical parameters outside control levels, which reflect water contamination.

Laboratory
Chlorella Vulgaris

03

It is a single-celled green microalgae found in freshwater and other aquatic habitats. It is known for its high growth rate and its ability to photosynthesize efficiently, which makes it an organism of interest in various fields, including bioremediation.

I believe that using agar-agar to contain Chlorella vulgaris in water bioremediation improves the effectiveness of the treatment by keeping the algae in direct contact with the contaminants, without dispersing. Furthermore, being biodegradable and non-toxic, agar-agar ensures an environmentally safe and sustainable process.
